Sebastian Belz earned a degree in spatial planning from the University of Dortmund in 1998. He was working as a student assistant at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy for several years. Since 1999 he has been executive director of the econex verkehrsconsult gmbh in Wuppertal, which is a consulting agency that focuses on regional rail and local public transport.

He has been an active member of the German Society for Transport Science (www.dvwg.de) since 2001 and a member of its presidium since 2009. He is also a member of the European Platform of Transport Sciences (www.epts.eu) where he has been active since 2001. In 2008 he was made general secretary of the EPTS and is working to form a pan-european network of transport scientists. He has been organizing the European Friedrich-List-Award since 2004 and in 2018 he lead the creation of the EPTS Foundation as an umbrella organisation and advocacy group for transport scientists in the EU.

Furthermore he is a member of the advisory board of the Gesellschaft für rationale Verkehrspolitik GRV, a member of the BSW's group "Integration Schiene" and a supporting member of the Allianz pro Schiene. He was also chairman of the interest group Schiene IGS until 2014.

He is a bearer of the Carl-Pirath-Medaille of the German Society for Transport Science, the badge of honour of the DVWG's youth panel and the Public Award of the Croatian Society for Transport Science.

Mr. Belz has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Wuppertal since 2017.
